Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kristian Lautrup Nielsen and I always had a great passion for climate and weather, which led me to study a Master’s degree in Climate Change, Impacts, Mitigation and Adaptation and a Bachelor in Geophysics, both from the University of Copenhagen (Denmark). I had the chance to use the knowledge and skills acquired during my studies, and to further expand and improve these in two start-up companies related to weather and climate in Denmark. The last three years I have been working full time on a European Horizon 2020 project called SECLI-FIRM tailoring seasonal climate forecast for endusers in the renewable energy sector.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
2018 – current
(Research Scientist)
I am currently working for UL mainly on the EU H2020 project SECLI-FIRM (read more below). Besides that I have here assisted in automizing the retrival and post processing of ERA5 reanalysis data, evaluated future potential impacts of climate change on renewable energy production and different tasks relted to data processing and analyses.
2017(Intern)
My main focus has been on optimizing the meteorological WRF model of a European domain as well as its daily running process. I have developed my skills in Python scripting and obtained further knowledge of meteorological models and how to use these in calculating weather information. It also gave me the opportunity to work together with a group of programmers and software developers.
2016(Intern)
I calculated energy and carbon emission savings for the implementation of the company’s products. I also helped in making the company´s webpage in WordPress, which made me improve and develop my skills in webpage design even further. I also took part in the process of designing and building an app for the company using React-Native.
The recent project I have worked on:
The goal of this H2020 project was to estimate the the added value of seasonal climate forecasting for integrated risk management. During three years I have worked on many different parts of the project such as: estimating and understanding end user needs, obtaining and homogenizing both reanalysis data and seasonal forecast data from differnt sources, tailoring and optimizing the forecast to fit the needs of the enduser and optimize the skill and finally developing a service for delivering these forcasts to the enduser. This has given me vast knowledge of the entire process developing a service arround seasonal climate forecasts.

Education and studies
During my education I worked individually but also had numerous group projects, which has given me competences in relation to project management and in collaborating with people from different educational backgrounds and countries.
Bachelor in Geophysics
2010-2013
I obtained an understanding of the geophysical aspects of our planet including meteorological, terrestrial and climate change perspectives. I have knowledge of climate models and of the parameters that play a role in the global climate system. With these skills, I can understand and work with climate models and different climate scenarios and analyse their impacts at regional and global scales.
Master in Climate Change, impacts, mitigation and adaptation.
2013-2016
In this 2-year interdisciplinary masters degree, I followed the natural science direction on the master. I obtained a broad knowledge of how the global climate system works and what effects will the changing climate have both at a local and global scale. Also, I acquired a toolset for analysing energy systems and carbon-neutral energy production. I gained an excellent understanding of the risks derived from climate change and the strategies needed to mitigate it and adapt to it. Furthermore, this education was interdisciplinary, which gave me an insight into other aspects related to climate change such as economic and social science aspects. With all of these competencies, I can analyse and evaluate issues regarding both energy production and its impacts together with climate change from many different perspectives.
